Marcus Lindwall

Nine years building backend systems for large organisations, seven of them at Volvo Cars in Electrification — most of that in public charging, and more recently in home energy management.

I care about code that is still readable and safe to change years after it ships, and I use AI tooling to get there faster without giving that up. I look for product spaces with real stakes — work where the outcome is worth the engineering.

Approach

Maintainable by default

Services owned end to end — data model, API contract, deployment, observability. Written so the next engineer can change them without fear.

AI-accelerated, not AI-authored

AI tooling carries the mechanical work and shortens the loop. Architecture, trade-offs and review stay a human responsibility.

What I look for

Challenging domains with real impact, at whatever scale. Most recently vehicle electrification — energy optimisation at home, and public charging on the road.

Electrification

Home Energy Management

2025 — Present
  • Designing and building the backend services that onboard and model a customer's energy assets — vehicles, charging locations and wallbox equipment mapped to physical sites.
  • Helped deliver a year of free home charging for eligible cars, built with Vattenfall — over 1,000 customers have claimed it so far.
  • Consolidated eligibility and access rules that had been scattered across the codebase into one predictable funnel — logic that can now be reasoned about, tested and changed safely.

Public Charging

2023 — 2025
  • Promoted to senior while continuing to own the public charging services — architecture, implementation and production support.
  • Onboarded Digital Charging Solutions as the replacement charging provider, building out the new integration through 2023 while keeping the outgoing service running for existing customers, then coordinating the cutover at launch that November.
  • Moved the services off an ageing AWS Kubernetes cluster onto a new Azure-hosted one.
  • Migrated the services from Dropwizard to Spring Boot, onto the organisation’s standard stack.

Services run in Docker and Kubernetes on Azure, with PostgreSQL for persistence.

Electrification — Public Charging

Public charging in the Volvo app

2020 — 2022
  • Delivered the first native public charging experience in the Volvo Cars app, built with Plugsurfing as launch partner on their new Drive partner API and informing the contract as its first consumer.
  • Shipped in May 2022 after eighteen months of development; around 60,000 drivers registered for the service through the app over its lifespan.
  • Built an internal CMS in React and Next.js so app developers and QA engineers could manage test conditions on their own, with a REST API behind it that let QA drive those conditions from their automated suites.

Recharge

2019 — 2021
  • Owned the backend behind a time-limited charging offer bundled with a PHEV purchase — the coordination layer between the mobile app and downstream charging and payment services.
  • Handled eligibility, consent and the full offer lifecycle, through to a secured reimbursement flow at the end of the offer period — around 43,000 customers registered.
  • Supported the offer through to close, backing customer care on claims and handling late registrations so no eligible customer lost their reimbursement.

Services ran in Docker and Kubernetes on AWS, on a mix of Spring Boot and Dropwizard.

Service Activation & Feasibility

  • Worked on service activation and feasibility — the systems that decide whether a physical address can be connected to the ISP network.
  • Built backend features in Java and Kotlin on Spring Boot, processing address data at national scale as the basis for those feasibility decisions.
  • Contributed frontend work in React, primarily internal administrative tools and data overviews.
  • Started via a talent programme, rotating across domains and spending time with customer care and field service — useful grounding for systems whose output ends in a physical install.

Software Developer, Intern

  • Worked backend and frontend on a white-label travel booking service, on a legacy Java 6 and Spring Boot codebase.
  • Integrated a JavaScript PDF viewer into the booking UI, letting agents read and print travel documents without downloading files or leaving the flow.
